The Sagra del Tordo is one of the oldest celebrations in Tuscany, held in the picturesque village of Montalcino. This event has its roots in the town’s neighborhoods, which each year reenact their past and historical traditions, offering visitors a unique immersion in the medieval atmosphere.

During the festival, attendees can enjoy food and wine delicacies typical of the area, with Brunello di Montalcino playing the starring role. Among the dishes on offer are pici with sauce, pappardelle with wild boar ragout and barbecued meat, accompanied by excellent glasses of red wine. In addition to culinary delights, the event offers the chance to relive the emotions of the past thanks to historical parades and traditional performances.

The Districts of Montalcino
Montalcino is divided into four quarters: the Borghetto, with white and red clothes; the Pianello, with white and blue colors; the Ruga, with yellow and blue clothes; and the Travaglio, with yellow and red colors. Every year, residents and visitors eagerly await the archery competition, where the districts compete in an exciting and emotion-filled contest. The competition is accompanied by historical events, including parades, flag-waving performances and costumed period figures, which recreate the atmosphere of a bygone era.

The origins of the Sagra del Tordo date back to the area's hunting tradition, which saw the men of the village engaged in hunting during the bird migration season, particularly thrushes, in October.

After the hunt, the men would return with their spoils, which the wives would cook to celebrate the success of the hunt. This tradition is revived in the last weekend of October, with the inhabitants dressed in medieval costumes, parades and folk music creating a festive and joyful atmosphere.

The Sagra del Tordo is an unmissable occasion for those visiting Montalcino, offering the chance to relive the emotions of the Middle Ages and enjoy local specialties. It is an event that enriches every stay with its authentic historical atmosphere and culinary delights.
